Background of the study
Political corruption remains a significant impediment to infrastructural development in many localities. In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State, corruption has been identified as a major factor that derails the equitable allocation of resources and the implementation of development projects. Corruption manifests in various forms, including embezzlement of public funds, bribery, and favoritism, which collectively lead to poorly executed infrastructure projects and substandard public services (Ekor, 2023). Such practices not only hinder the development of critical infrastructure like roads, schools, and hospitals but also diminish public trust in government institutions (Osakwe, 2024). Recent studies have shown that corruption at the local government level significantly delays project completion and increases the cost of development, thereby exacerbating socio-economic disparities (Bassey, 2025). This study investigates the direct impact of political corruption on infrastructural development in Uhunmwonde. By analyzing corruption patterns and their consequences on project outcomes, the research aims to highlight the urgency of implementing anti-corruption measures and strengthening accountability mechanisms in local governance.

Statement of the problem
In Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, infrastructural development is severely hampered by pervasive political corruption. The misappropriation of funds, bribery, and nepotistic practices have led to incomplete or poorly executed infrastructure projects, adversely affecting the quality of public services and community well-being. The corruption undermines investor confidence and results in inefficient use of scarce resources, ultimately impeding socio-economic progress. The failure to deliver functional infrastructure not only compromises daily life but also deters further development initiatives. This study seeks to identify the key factors driving corruption in Uhunmwonde and to assess its impact on infrastructural development, with the aim of proposing effective measures to curb corrupt practices and enhance service delivery.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the extent of political corruption affecting infrastructural development in Uhunmwonde.

  2. To identify the key corruption practices that undermine infrastructure projects.

  3. To propose policy recommendations for reducing corruption and improving infrastructure delivery.

Research questions:

  1. How does political corruption affect infrastructural development in Uhunmwonde?

  2. What are the most prevalent forms of corruption in local government infrastructure projects?

  3. What measures can be implemented to reduce corruption and enhance infrastructure quality?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Political corruption negatively impacts the quality and timeliness of infrastructural development.

  2. H2: Misappropriation of funds is a primary factor contributing to poor infrastructure.

  3. H3: Strengthening accountability mechanisms will significantly improve infrastructural outcomes.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of how political corruption affects infrastructural development in Uhunmwonde. The insights generated will help policymakers and stakeholders to implement stronger accountability measures and anti-corruption strategies, ensuring that development projects are executed efficiently. The findings are expected to contribute to the broader efforts of promoting transparency and sustainable development in local government administration (Udo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating the impact of political corruption on infrastructural development within Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State. It focuses solely on local government projects and corruption-related challenges.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Political Corruption: The misuse of public power for private gain, often manifested through bribery and embezzlement.

  2. Infrastructural Development: The construction and maintenance of foundational services and facilities, such as roads, schools, and hospitals.

  3. Accountability Mechanisms: Systems and procedures designed to ensure transparency and responsibility in governance.
